Mossel Bay municipality officially launched its K9 unit on Tuesday, with support from the provincial administration.

Funds to establish the municipal K9 unit came from the Ministry for Police Oversight and Community Safety, as part of efforts to help capacitate municipalities to grow their community safety portfolio.

Four Belgian Malinois dogs, Mufasa, Debbie, Wendy, and Whiskey, were trained in personal protection, as well as sniffing out narcotics, ammunition, and endangered species.

Western Cape Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen, says residents can be proud of their local government as it strives to improve safety for all.

He said last year the Joint Operations Centre was launched while earlier this year two armoured personnel carriers were acquired, and 13 peace officers graduated from training.

"All of this is being done to enhance safety in the municipal area, across the Garden Route, and by extension the entire Western Cape," he said.

Meanwhile, Mossel Bay mayor, Dirk Kotze, said the key to their successes in their first two years in office was a result of the dedicated commitment from Allen's office.

He highlighted the importance of partnerships between the community, the private sector, and the provincial government in being able to deliver these services.
