A municipal vehicle worth R110 000 was set alight by community members from the Joza informal settlement in Makhanda on Monday.
Police Spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni says the driver of the vehicle, who is in his sixties, was busy dropping off workers in the afternoon when he was approached by a group who demanded his keys.
He says when the driver refused he was forced out of his bakkie and started running towards nearby houses.
Captain Tonjeni says as he was running the bakkie was set alight before the group scattered into the residential area.
A case of malicious damage to property is under investigation and no arrests have been made.
Police warned the community not to resort to acts of lawlessness.
