Mossel Bay motorist “five times over the legal limit”


A Mossel Bay motorist who was allegedly five times over the legal drinking limit was one of 44 people arrested in the Western Cape this past long weekend for drunken driving.

The province’s traffic chief, Kenny Africa, said that up until Monday a total of 735 motorists were tested for alcohol over the Easter long weekend.

He said that the motorist stopped in Mossel Bay had blood alcohol reading of “1.30mg/100ml, five times over the legal limit”.

Africa said several other people were arrested for having false documents, reckless and negligent driving and excessive speed, where the motorist was arrested at Laingsburg for driving 162km/h in a 120km/h zone.

Meanwhile, Buffalo City Traffic Department said that 17 motorists were arrested this past weekend for drunken driving.

The Metro’s Traffic Chief, Quinton Chetty, said that the blood samples taken using the new “EBAT device”.

“This makes the total number of 89 drunken drivers arrested since March,” Chetty said.

He added that all enforcement agencies were on alert to deal with the traffic volumes expected into the Metro and will act decisively with those who are breaking the law.
