The man who died in a boat accident close to the tidal pool in Tergniet near Mossel Bay on Friday has been identified as 49-year-old Hannes Steyn.

Police spokesperson, Sgt Laurianne Botha says Steyn and his 37-year-old wife, Maryna from Welkom in the Free State were fishing from a small boat when it capsized near the shore.

Family told Algoa FM News that Hannes suffered a heart attack two weeks ago.

It is believed that the couple was on holiday in Mossel Bay.

Sergeant Botha says bystanders tried to assist Steyn but he died on the scene.

He was apparently trapped under the boat when it capsized while his wife managed to swim out from underneath.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
