At least 57 drunk drivers, aged between 18 and 64, were arrested in Nelson Mandela Bay during a joint operation between the National and Provincial Traffic Departments, the Metro's traffic service and the SA Police Service at the weekend.
The deputy director of the provincial traffic department, Charles Bramwell says Operation Clean Sweep was supported by executive mayor, Danny Jordaan and councilors of the various political parties.
He says Jordaan visited traffic officers at various road blocks on Saturday evening and early Sunday morning.
Bramwell says similar operations will continue accross the Eastern Cape ahead of the festive season.
