More details emerge in Tuesday's fatal shooting in PE traffic

Port Elizabeth police are implementing a 72-hour action plan after a 60-year-old metro traffic official was fatally wounded in broad daylight during rush hour traffic on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the officer had a 43-year-old passenger, who is a municipal employee, who was shot in her hand.

She says it is alleged that an unknown man wearing a balaclava approached from the driver's side and fired several shots at the stationary vehicle.

The driver accelerated and turned into Victoria Drive hitting a vehicle before driving through a boundary fence.

Naidu says the driver jumped out of the vehicle where he collapsed and died.

Police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

The name of the victim will only be released once all his family members have been informed of his death.

The motive for Tuesday's murder is not known and police appealed to anyone who can assist in the investigation to come forward.

The Metro's traffic Chief Warren Prins expressed his concern with the fact that two of his officers were shot at in the last week.

On Saturday in Kamesh, a gunman fired shots at another Metro traffic officer.

The man was not injured but a case of attempted murder is under investigation.
