More action needed on Kwazakhele gun violence

As the Kwazakhele community is reeling from another mass shooting at the weekend, Nelson Mandela Bay Ward councillor Gama Maqula has called for action rather than talk from police minister, Bheki Cele.

This comes after four people were killed and three others injured at a birthday celebration this weekend, the second mass shooting in the same area since eight people were killed and three others wounded in Maqanda Street a fortnight ago

The Maqanda Street incident prompted a visit by the Police Minister who vowed that police would work around the clock to ensure that the gunmen were caught.

Police said the latest mass shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when three men opened fire on a group of people at a house on Nomjila Street, also in Kwazakhele.

Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said a police patrol was stopped by a woman who alerted them to the shooting.

She said the deceased included three women and a man, while two men and another woman were injured.

“The owner of the house, aged 28, died in the incident,” she said.

Meanwhile, Councillor Maqula has called for no efforts to be spared in catching the cold-blooded killers.

“We want to reemphasize our call to the minister to deploy the TRT in that area to make sure that the unlicensed firearms which are in the wrong hands are recovered.”

Maqula called for a city-wide "shutdown" so a thorough search for the perpetrators can take place.

“We must do this before innocent and ordinary people are killed,” he added.
