Moosagie fraud case postponed

The fraud case of Port Elizabeth's Moosagie family was postponed in the Commercial Crimes court on Tuesday to the 20th of March.

This followed the withdrawal of attorney, Shuaib Ahmed who was replaced by Alwyn Griebenouw.

Magistrate Louis Claassen warned Baheejah Moosagie, one of three family members on trial, that the case had been on the roll for some time and that the court needed to set a trial date.

They family face charges of fraud and theft totaling about R2m.

Daughter, Lutfia Moosagie who resides in Durban, was not in court.

Amier Moosagie, who has already been convicted in a separate matter, disappeared on Christmas Day last year while on holiday in Port St John's.

Port Elizabeth high court judge, Dyalan Chetty, who refused to recuse himself, warned that if he does not appear in court on the 14th of February, his R30 000 bail will be forfeited.

Moosagie and his business partner, Desiree Jenkins, were convicted last May of tax fraud, forgery, corruption, money laundering and racketeering involving an amount of R3m.

Sentencing proceedings ground to a halt following Moosagie's disappearance.
