The Budget and Treasury Committee of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be asked to approve the writing off of R16.8 million that is regarded as irrecoverable.
In a report to the committee that meets on Thursday, the Budget and Treasury Directorate states that all possible measures have been taken to recover the arrear charges.
It states that it will not be financially justifiable to incur any further legal costs.
Of the total amount, just less than R6.1 million is interest, while Budget and Treasury has also incurred losses of nearly R900 000 in legal costs.
A further R6.2 million of the total is for electricity and energy of which R4.9 million is for unpaid consumption; R1.2 million for damage to electrical equipment and R102 000 associated with the tampering of meters.
