Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Police Chief Yolanda Faro says attacks on law enforcement officers will not be tolerated as it can be considered an attack against the state.
She was reacting to Tuesday night's incident in which a Metro Police constable was attacked while issuing a fine in Bertram Road in Bethelsdorp.
Faro says that when walking back to his vehicle, the suspect tried to forcefully retrieve his license and allegedly pushed the officer.
The officer became alarmed when a crowd started to gather, made an emergency call for assistance and drove off in the direction of the Bloemendal precinct.
Chief Faro says responding Metro Police officers assessed the situation and found the crowd to be hostile.
All Metro Police officers were withdrawn from the scene and no fines issued,
A case of assault, interfering with a member's duty and failing to adhere to instruction of a Metro Police officer was opened at the Bethelsdorp police station.
Safety and Security Executive Director, Advocate Keith Meyer, said this attack was the second incident in the Metro this week where law enforcement officers were endangered.
Two traffic officers were attacked on Monday afternoon while performing their duties and an official firearm was stolen.
