Metro mourns death of traffic officer following horror accident on PE freeway

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro has expressed its condolences to the families of a senior traffic officer and an elderly man who died in a horror accident on the N2 freeway in Port Elizabeth on Thursday afternoon.

Safety and Security MMC John Best says the deceased traffic officer was 57-year-old, Joseph Mbaxa.

The elderly man who died in the second vehicle was identified in reports as 93-year-old Cyril Scott.

Best says police officers on the scene confirmed that the elderly man was driving from Cotswold onto the N2, but then did an about turn and drove towards oncoming traffic.

Another vehicle travelling in front of Mbaxa managed to swerve out of the way, but it was too late for the traffic officer to react.
