Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal officials are looking at alternative forms of public lighting as a result of the extensive theft of cables and and street light infrastructure.
Metrominute says that a report to the Municipality's Public Accounts Committee and Electricity and Energy Directorate, says that other factors such as illegal connections to street lighting and the high mast networks has created “a huge backlog”.
The report states that steps have also been taken over the past two months to deal with street and high mast lighting in a concerted way.
These include changing high mast lighting to energy efficient lighting, which is already in progress, with high mast lights in New Brighton, Walmer, Motherwell and KwaNobuhle now fitted with LED luminaires.
In addition, it says that 60 lights along the M-4 freeway have been changed to energy efficient lighting and cables that had been stolen in many locations are being replaced.
