Two Nelson Mandela Bay Metro police officers were injured when their vehicle was stoned by a group of people looting a spaza shop in the city’s northern areas.
Municipality spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, confirmed the incident, which occurred in Mpuku Street in Timothy Valley on Tuesday.
Police had their hands full trying to quell incidents of looting reported in different areas of Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp where at least four shops were targeted.
Public Order Police Unit members used teargas, stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds, who began their looting spree at around 8 am.
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, said SAPS would continue to maintain a strong presence in those areas.
No arrests were made.
