Mental health of Gqeberha murder accused in question

The mental health of a Gqeberha man, who was arrested for the murder of his mother in her Park Drive flat, is in question.

Thirty-three-year-old, Maurice Butlion, made a brief appearance in a video from St Albans Prison at the city's Magistrates Court on Monday.

State Prosecutor, Melani Hammet, indicated his defence team would like more time to interview the Butlions' family on his mental health.

She further indicated that his family gave them vague answers during the last consultations.

Hammet told the court that Butlions legal team would then be able to confirm a way forward based on the information conveyed by his family.

The accused was arrested for the murder of his 65-year-old mother, Sharon-Ann who died in a suspicious fire that engulfed the flat in September.

He was arrested at an establishment in Walmer a day after his mother's vehicle was found abandoned along Victoria Drive.

The case has been remanded to the 14th of November.

During his first court appearance he communicated to the court that he intends to plead guilty, but during his second appearance, it seemed like he made an about-turn.

In October, Magistrate Abigail Beeton remarked that the accused looked confused, however, he indicated that he was okay.
