The George Municipality has confirmed that a member of the public was killed in a freak accident in the Blanco area on Wednesday.
The Municipality says the victim was struck by the back wheel of a mechanical excavator which was clearing illegal dumping.
The bystander was hospitalized but unfortunately passed away from his injuries, while the operator of the municipal excavator was hospitalised for shock.
George Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha, expressed his sadness at the incident and offered his condolences to the bereaved family.
He says the matter will be thoroughly investigated while an inquest docket has been opened by the Police.
