MEC Weziwe Tikana welcomes speedy probe into fatal train crash

Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, has welcomed the speedy probe into this week's fatal train accident at Peelton near King Williams Town.

She says the investigating team of the Railway Safety Regulator was led by CEO Nkululeko Poya.

Two employees of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, Piet Baloyi and Yingwani Shivambu, were killed when a Transnet Freight Rail train collided head-on with a Shosholoza Meyl passenger train.

Six others were seriously injured, including the driver and assistant of the other train who jumped off their train second before the collision.

The spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, Ncedo Kumbaca, says the line has been closed indefinitely and a preliminary report will be issued by Rail Safety Regulator on Saturday, which will be followed by a board of inquiry.

"We really appreciate this speedy response from this institution and we will be able to deal with all those who are responsible for this tragic accident. It has been an unfortunate incident for the province because the Eastern Cape is one of the leading provinces in terms of moving our people back to rail, through our back to rail connection people campaign." says Kumbaca.
