The Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Weziwe Tikana, says statistics show there is an increase in road fatalities and the department will now focus on a yearly run campaign to promote road safety.
Tikana will launch the 2014 October Transport month campaign in Queenstown on Friday.
The Road Safety Campaign will run for one year and aims to reduce road carnage in support of the 2011-2020 United Nations 'Decade of Action 'Campaign.
Tikana says the initiative will also focus on the visibility of law enforcement officials on the road.
"When you look at the statistics on road fatalities, you can see that they are increasing. We have taken a decision to focus on a 1 year programme where we engage with people" she said.
