MEC calls for clampdown on illegal liquor trade

Eastern Cape Safety MEC, Helen Sauls August has called for a clampdown on illegal and irresponsible liquor trade.

She made the appeal to municipalities and law enforcement agencies during the presentation of her Department's policy speech in the Bhisho legislature on Wednesday.

Sauls-August also called on the legislature to support her call for a moratorium on the issuing of new liquor licences throughout the Province while the Liquor Act is under review.

Sauls August said the proliferation of liquor outlets is directly linked to violent and criminal behaviour adding that its consequences on the social and moral fibre of society have become intolerable.
