Measures in place to prevent June circumcision deaths

The Eastern Cape Health Department says its put all measures in place to prevent deaths during the June traditional circumcision season.

The Eastern Cape Department of health says they have put all measures in place to prevent deaths in the June traditional circumcision season.

MEC Sicelo Gqobane handed over 37 hired vans for the season to designated medical officers in East London on Tuesday.

Gqobane says the vans will make it easier for the medical officers and traditional leaders when they do checkups at initiation schools in hard to reach rural areas throughout the province.

He adds that because circumcision has been proven to be one of the preventative measure in HIV prevention, they encourage young men to do it, not necessarily the traditional one.

The vans were funded from the R20 million from the national department aimed at curbing deaths in initiation schools.

They will be returned on July 19
