Mercedez Benz South Africa said 2016 had been a record year for the group, with record sales of over two million luxury passenger cars.
Delivering the South African company's results at a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, outgoing CEO, Arno van der Merwe, said this was supported by more than 12.4 percent growth in Europe and more than 26 percent growth in China.
He said group revenue grew 2.5% to R153.3bn euro with a net profit of R8.8 bn euro.
Van der Merwe said Mercedes Benz South Africa grew its market share to seven percent of the total South African market.
He said un-audited figures show that Mercedes Benz South Africa had achieved healthy levels of revenue for this past financial year.
"2016 has been a very successful year for Mercedes Benz South Africa. Not only have we posted healthy revenue growth but also healthy growth in earnings before interest and tax. So, we look back at 2016 feeling good about what we've achieved," he said.
Van Der Merwe said the East London-based manufacturer had seen good growth on the manufacturing side, as well as increased exports and production numbers.
He said there were also good investments by the company in 2016 to improve capacity, while new models also came on line.
Van Der Merwe said while there were many things to be proud of, 2017 provides new opportunities.
"We've actually just announced that we'd be investing into the East London manufacturing facility to bring AMG production to South Africa. That is incrediblly exciting. That's something that is a new step for us. Something that we can all work on together. It brings opportunities for us to work on improved employment levels which is a critical topic for everybody. So we are extremely excited about that," said Van der Merwe.
Mercedes-Benz South Africa will be producing the Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic, C63 and C63 S in East London later this year alongside the C-Class that is currently built for there for the local and export market.
