Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani has challenged Finance Minister Tito Mboweni to instruct Ministers to also stop using luxury vehicles and start using public transport as a cost-cutting measure.
Bobani replied to a published story on IOL news on Twitter asking Ministers to follow the newly proposed municipal cost-cutting regulations as well.
Mboweni and Co-operative Governance Minister Dr Nkosana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the municipal cost-containment regulations will be effective from the first of July.
In an interview with eNCA on Tuesday morning, Bobani said the mayor's vehicle was sponsored by Volkswagen, therefore it does not affect taxpayers.
He said, however that he was prepared to stop using that vehicle if Ministers do the same.
Asked about other cost-cutting measures government officials can introduce, Bobani told Algoa FM News that the focus should be on fighting corruption.
He says corruption must be fought together and is the worst form of disease as money needs to go to "our people" for service delivery.
