The mayor of Tarkastad in the Eastern Cape has appeared in court for allegedly assaulting an elderly woman.
Provincial police spokesperson, captain Ernest Sigobe, says mayor Kaya Nqiqi was arrested on Monday morning and was later released on bail of R1000.
The charge against him was laid by an elderly woman who claimed that the mayor had assaulted her last week following an altercation about joblessness in the town.
Mayor Nqiqi will appear in court again on February 22.
ANC provincial secretary Mlibo Qoboshiyane says the party will investigate the allegations against the Nqiqi.
