Members of the Tactical Task Force, K9 unit and Kabega Park Police have made a massive perlemoen bust in Port Elizabeth.
Tactical Task Force Commander Tom Schwartz says they acted on a tip-off and swooped on a house in Westering just after midnight where they seized 1.12 tons of abalone valued at more than R1.1 million. He says its the biggest bust of its kind in the city this year.
A man in his 30's was arrested and will appear in court soon for the illegal possession of abalone.
Schwartz says it took them more than 5 hours to sort, defrost and count the 7 570 units of abalone.
"The Task Force worked jointly with the K9 unit as well as the Kabega Park police station. A great big thanks to them all who put in the extra hours. We did respond on a tip-off. We searched his house in Westering where we found the abalone. We confiscated 4 deep freezers and a City Golf" he said.
