Martin Stevens (47) made a brief appearance in the Port Elizabeth magistrate's court on Tuesday morning after handing himself over at the Mount Road police station on Monday in the company of his lawyer.
Stevens was being sought by police in an attempted murder case after his 43-year old wife, Anne-Marie was stabbed inside her vehicle in a street in front of her home in Sydenham on Wednesday night.
She is still in hospital in a serious condition.
Police captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says Stevens remains in custody and will be back in court on Wednesday.
Janse van Rensburg says Stevens wife previously laid a charge of assault against him in July, and had apparently started with divorce proceedings against him.
Stevens shot and killed his first wife and her friend 15 years ago, but was acquitted on both charges, after the judge found that he had suffered a psychotic breakdown.
