A man who issued fraudulent death certificates during lockdown Level 5 has been found guilty in the Aberdeen Magistrates Court.

Mbuyiselo Lobi was sentenced to pay a fine of R12 000 or spend 12-months in prison, of which half is suspended for five years.

Lobi's fraudulent actions resulted in hundreds of people travelling from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape, especially on the N9 and the R61, in direct violation of lockdown regulations.

Officers had to turn back 157 vehicles between the 27th of March and the 30th of April at the EC ports of entry for not having the necessary documentation.

The MEC for Transport and Safety in the Eastern Cape Weziwe Tikana-Gxotihuwe welcomed the sentence.
