Man sentenced for killing ex-girlfriends mother

The former boyfriend of a Knysna resident who pleaded guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend's mother, has been sentenced in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.

Twenty-year-old Kyle Maspero, was found guilty of killing 39-year old Rosemary Theron in March 2013.

Her daughter, Phoenix Racing Cloud, is currently serving a 15 year sentence for her role in her mother's murder.

Maspero, who was 17 years old at the time, killed 39-year old Rosemary Theron in March 2013 by sneaking up on her from behind while her 18 year old daughter, Phoenix Racing Cloud Theron hugged their victim.

The deceased's daughter is currently serving a 15 year sentence after she entered into a plea agreement with the State.

Maspero admitted in a statement that he smoked dagga and used tik on the day of the murder. He said his ex-girlfriend got into an argument with her mother after which they planned the murder. When Phoenix approached her mother pretending to apologise for the fight, Maspero walked up to them from behind, strangling the woman with a rope. The body was dumped near Strandfontein.

The Judge President of the Western Cape High Court, Judge John Hlophe sentenced Maspero to 18 years imprisonment of which five years were suspended.

Maspero therefore received an effective 13 year jail sentence.
