Police in Gqeberha are investigating a case of murder following a dramatic shooting incident on the M4 Freeway on Thursday night.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says according to a preliminary report a 27-year-old man was driving his grey VW Polo hatch with two of his friends when they suddenly heard a loud noise, thinking that a tyre had burst.
The incident happened at about 7.30 pm.
She says they soon realised they were being shot at and the driver lost control of his vehicle, colliding into the railings on the side of the road.
The driver and a passenger ran away but when they returned they found their friend dead in the back seat with multiple gunshot wounds.
Janse van Rensburg says the motive for the shooting as well as the suspects are unknown at this stage.
The victim was identified as 34-year-old Makilone Rapelang Emanuel.
Cases of murder and attempted murder are under investigation.
