Man from Bloem drowns at Morgans Bay

A man has drowned while swimming in the sea at Morgans Bay, north of East London.

NSRI East London station commander Geoff McGregor says they were alerted at 12.50pm on Sunday to reports of a drowning in progress at Morgans Bay.

Morgans Bay Hotel owner Richard Warren Smith had launched his jet-ski and recovered a 39-year-old man who was found floating face down in the surf line about 100 metres off-shore.

Smith brought the victim to the beach where assisted by bystanders, CPR efforts were commenced.

An Eastern Cape government health EMS rescue helicopter arrived and paramedics continued with CPR, but sadly after all efforts to resuscitate the man was exhausted he was declared dead.

The man was from Bloemfontein.
