Port Alfred police have opened an inquest docket after a 27-year-old man drowned in the Kowie River on Sunday.
NSRI station commander, Juan Pretorius, said it appeared that the man had got into difficulty while swimming with friends in the river.
He says a local man dived in to attempt to rescue the victim but he had already disappeared under water.
The man's body was later found by police divers.
He was identified on Monday morning as Waldo Williams from Station Hill
