Eastern Cape police have arrested a 29-year-old man for the alleged rape of a 73-year-old woman at Thembeni locality near Willowvale.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said it was alleged that the woman was asleep when she was awoken by someone touching her.
“The suspect overpowered the victim and allegedly raped her. The victim managed to identify the suspect,” he said.
Tonjeni said that the woman alerted community members about the attack earlier this week and they tracked down the suspect and handed him over to Willowvale police.
“The community did not assault the suspect,” he said.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General, Liziwe Ntshinga, thanked the members of the community for their assistance in apprehending the suspect and praised then for not taking the law into their own hands.
Captain Tonjeni said the suspect would appear before the Willowvale Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
