Man arrested for murder, another for rape in ECape

KING WILIAM’S TOWN, March 27 (ANA) – Eastern Cape police have arrested a man for murder and another for rape in two separate incidents.

A 50-year-old man was arrested for the alleged murder of a 28-year-old man on Friday afternoon at Hlobo village, Ngqamakhwe, spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said.

“The allegation is that the both the suspect and the deceased were attending a traditional ceremony on the date in question. The 50-year-old suspect was a designated supplier of liquor (injoli). The suspect ordered all the young men to vacate the hut and to drink their liquor outside as the hut was full,” he said on Sunday.

The other young men complied with the order but Mziyanda Mzamo did not. The older man allegedly pushed Mzamo outside the hut, and a fight ensued between the two.

“The suspect [allegedly] drew his knife and stabbed the deceased on his upper body. The deceased died instantly.”

The suspect was arrested and charged with murder. He would appear before the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, Manatha said.

In the second incident, a 30-year-old man was arrested by Dutywa police on Sunday morning for allegedly raping his 25-year-old girlfriend.

The alleged rape took place at GPO informal settlement at Dutywa late on Thursday night, he said.

“The allegation is that the suspect went to visit his girlfriend on the night in question. He found the victim with her two friends (ladies). The suspect demanded to be given some money. The two friends of the victim left the suspect and the victim.”

The victim did not have money and was allegedly “accosted and raped by the suspect”.

The man was traced and found at his shack at GPO informal settlement on Sunday morning. He was arrested and charged with rape. He was due to appear in the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, Manatha said.
