A man accused of killing 32-year-old Riaan Marais from Gqeberha made a brief appearance in the Magistrates Court on Monday.

Thirty-year-old Brendin Rossouw will spend another night in jail after his case was remanded to Tuesday for a possible bail application.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says on Friday night an altercation broke out in Melkhout Street in Greenbushes between Rossouw and Marais.

She says initial reports suggest that Rossouw approached Marais shortly before 9 pm on behalf of his girlfriend, to complain about his dog.

Colonel Naidu says Rossouw allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed Marais in the head when the argument became heated.

She says they were only informed about the incident on Saturday when hospital staff contacted the police.

Colonel Naidu says they were unable to get a statement from Marais as he was in critical condition and statements from eyewitnesses are still outstanding.

She says police do not yet have all the particulars of what transpired on the night and it will form part of their murder investigation.

Colonel Naidu says Rossouw went to the Kabega Park police station to open a case of assault against Marais but was arrested on the spot.

Marais died from his injuries on Monday.
