Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane expressed his profound sadness and outrage at the "heinous" murder of an 85-year-old woman in Keiskamahoek this weekend.
Police said the woman's body was discovered in the bedroom of her house on Saturday by a domestic worker.
An investigation into rape, murder and house robbery is underway.
The Premier said this cruel crime was a stark reminder of the moral decay that threatens the very fabric of our society.
Mabuyane also emphasised the importance of community vigilance, calling on residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
In a statement, he urged families to ensure their elderly relatives have access to emergency services.
"The safety and well-being of our elderly and vulnerable citizens are of utmost importance.
"We must work together to create a society where our seniors can live without fear of harm or exploitation," Mabuyane stressed.
