Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane has added the voice of the provincial government to the tributes that came in for the late Professor, Mkhuseli Mashiyi.

The Eastern Cape Health Department announced the passing of the head of the clinical unit in Nephrology at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha this weekend.

“The loss of Prof. Mashiyi is a profound one for the medical fraternity and for the Eastern Cape as a whole,” Mabuyane said in a tribute on Monday.

“His expertise, compassion, and relentless pursuit of excellence in nephrology and healthcare in general will be sorely missed.

“Prof. Mashiyi was not only a beacon of excellence in his medical field but also a visionary leader who made significant contributions to the healthcare sector in the province.

“As the founder of Herolim private hospital in Mthatha, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving healthcare for the people of this province,” Mabuyane said.

The Eastern Cape Health Department said his contributions to nephrology and patient care have left an indelible mark on both the institution and the lives of countless individuals he served.

“Prof. Mashiyi was known for his unwavering commitment to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient outcomes,” said communications director, Siyanda Manana.

"The Department once more extends its heartfelt condolences to his wife, family, friends and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

"Prof. Mashiyi’s legacy will continue to inspire and guide us in our work," he said.

The ANC in the Eastern Cape said Professor Mashiyi’s passing comes at a time when the country’s healthcare system is on the brink of a positive overhaul through the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI).

"He provided valuable guidance to the private healthcare industry on its role within the national health system.

"Professor Mashiyi had a deep understanding of the politics of healthcare and the needs of healthcare professionals," said party provincial spokesperson, Gift Nqondi.

A memorial service will be held for the late professor on Wednesday in Mthatha.
