Lusikisiki massacre - four more behind bars

The National Police Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola thanked all South Africans for their overwhelming support in providing information on the whereabouts of the wanted suspects in the Lusikisiki mass murders.

After photographs were distributed to national media the men were nabbed within 24 hours.

National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Anthlenda Mathe says the General also thanked journalists and social media users.

She says police cannot divulge where the suspects were found as it might jeopardise the investigation.

The first suspect was arrested over the weekend and made a brief appearance in the Lusikisiki Magistrate's Court on Tuesday marked by heightened security as heavily armed police escorted him in and out of the courtroom.

Siphosoxolo Myekethe, 45, who was found in possession of an unlicensed AK47 assault rifle, abandoned his bid for bail.

His co-accused, Songezo Vuma, Bonga Hintsa, Aphiwe Ndende and Lwando Shakes are expected to appear in court soon.

The motive for the massacre in which 18 people, mostly women were killed, remains unknown.

It is reported that the victims were murdered while preparing for umombulo, a tradition in IsiXhosa culture that marks the end of a mourning period.
