Lucky escape for surfer after getting hair entangled in leash

A female surfer was treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms after getting her hair caught in the leash of her surfboard.

Spokesperson for the NSRI Craig Lambinon says the St Francis Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress off-shore near the popular surf spot Granny's Pool.

The 22-year-old Cape Town surfer was caught in the rip currents and her entangled hair caused her to be dunked under the water.

Lambinon says swimmers also responded to the scene and found the women in severe distress.

He says their rescue craft had to negotiate through 4-meter swells but eventually managed to bring the casualty safely to shore.

The surfer was assessed and did not require immediate medical attention.
