A member of the Gang Task Team in Port Elizabeth had a lucky escape on Wednesday night when he was shot during a routine patrol in the northern areas.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu said members of the Visible Gang Intervention Unit were patrolling Malabar Ext 5 around 8 pm when they noticed a group of six to seven men congregating.
As the two officers alighted from their vehicle, shots were fired at them from the group.
A bullet struck one of the Constable's in his back.
The bulletproof vest saved the officer from serious injury or even death.
Although the bullet hit the vest, the Constable only suffered some bruising.
A bullet also struck the police vehicle and the suspects fled the scene.
Naidu said a case of attempted murder has been opened.
