Western Cape police opened an inquest docket after a 33-year-old man drowned near George on Saturday afternoon.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says a duty crew was activated after receiving reports of a drowning in progress at Gwaing River Mouth.
He says on arrival at the scene a search commenced for the local man who disappeared under the water, reportedly while swimming.
It appears that while a group of people were enjoying a day at the beach, one member got into difficulty when caught in rip currents during a receding tide.
Lambinon says the body was located under the water and brought to shore.
The man was declared dead on scene.
