Eastern Cape Local Government MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, has shelled out more than R1m to local governments across the province who have improved internal financial management controls.
He presented the Vuna Awards yesterday to 18 municipalities that met certain criteria in terms of their financial management.
The municipalities also received cash incentives ranging from R35 000 to R80 000 for the Chris Hani District Municipality, for spending 100% of its municipal infrastructure grant.
Qoboshiyane says the Vuna Awards are one way of ensuring that the good work in local municipalities is rewarded while trying to create an environment that will lead to clean audit reports.
