Local Government MEC meets disgruntled Sterkspruit residents

Eastern Cape local government MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane met with the enraged community of Sterkspruit on Monday to try to dissuade them from boycotting the general elections on Wednesday.

The meeting followed threats by the the Sterkspruit Civic Association to shut down businesses and all election operations this week.

The association has been demanding an independent municipality, arguing that the Senqu Municipality hasn't done anything for the residents of Sterkspruit.

Qoboshiyane says the treats have not materialised as special elections went on peacefully on Monday.

He says 1 044 registered special votes were handled and that isolated incidents of violence were reported.

The communities are also advised to stay calm in this area and go to the voting stations. Police will be deployed to ensure the elections are safe and free.
