Life St Dominic’s Hospital in East London celebrated its 75th anniversary on Wednesday, commemorating its opening of the hospital - then Mater-Dei - on 26 April 1948.
Coincidentally, Dawn Sparg, who was born in the hospital three days after it opened its doors, was recently admitted into the hospital and will be celebrating her 75th birthday on Saturday.
Hospital Manager, Musa Madonsela, said the birthday commemoration was a recognition of the facility’s history and a nod to its future plans.
The 211-bed hospital was founded by Dominican nurses, and has since become “a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals and state-of-the-art technology”.
Madonsela says the hospital is evolving into a high-tech facility to accommodate the needs of the community.
Meanwhile, Sparg says being back at the hospital under different circumstances on such an occasion is almost euphoric.
Recovering from an operation, Sparg said she would probably be spending her birthday in the hospital she was born in, with her children by her side.
