Life sentence for killer of Elliotdale police station commander

The Mthatha High court has sentenced 37-year old Noxolo Matya to life imprisonment for the murder of Elliotdale Police Station Commander, Nomalizo Dukumbana.

Matya was also sentenced to a further18-years imprisonment on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder. Both sentences will run concurrently.

Dukumbana was killed in December 2013 inside police barracks after being way laid by gunmen on her way from work.

Last week, Matya who worked as a Constable at the police station, pleaded guilty to being part of the plot to kill Dukumbana.

Three men charged with Matya have pleaded not guilty and are still in custody awaiting trial.

Eastern Cape provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills, has welcomed the life sentence imposed on Matya.
