Life in jail for Mossel Bay farmer’s killer

A Mossel Bay man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Hartenbos farmer, Freddie Tolman.

Thirty-five-year-old Lamlani Booi was the only one of six men to be arrested after Tolman was shot dead in December 2014, while he was on his way to pick up farm workers.

In passing sentence on Thursday, Judge Robert Henney said that farm attacks in the country were on the rise.

Henney said farmers are sitting ducks and soft targets, adding that farm attacks were a threat to the country’s food security.

He also sentenced Booi to 15-years imprisonment for the hijacking of a vehicle minutes after the murder.

Booi received a further 15-years imprisonment for his involvement in an armed robbery at the Mossel Bay golf club in 2015 and another four years imprisonment for the unlawful possession of a fire arm and ammunition.

Judge Henney said that the motive for murder of Tolman is still unknown and the only conclusion he could come to was that it was committed out of greed.
