A 38-year-old man was sentenced in the Bhisho High Court to life imprisonment for raping a woman in Peddie in 2015.
The National Prosecuting Authority said that Melumzi Tom was sentenced on Tuesday.
Spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani, said Tom was convicted of raping the 44-year-old woman in her house in the Lower Gwalana Administrative Area in Peddie in November that year.
She said Tom broke into the woman’s house and demanded money.
Ngcakani said he assaulted the woman with a firearm over the head and also shot her in the leg during the ordeal.
He was arrested in May 2018.
Ngcakani said Tom was also given lengthy jail sentences for sexual assault, robbery, housebreaking, assault GBH and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
She said these will run concurrently with the life sentence.
