Less than 500 active Covid-19 cases currently in NMBM

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says it is cautiously optimistic about the drop of active Covid-19 cases in the Bay.

Acting executive mayor, Thsohono Buyeye says latest statistics reveal that the Bay only has a total of 486 active cases.

Buyeye has also warned however that residents should continue to adhere to regulations to avoid a second wave of infections.

He says with the country moving to level two there will be more economic activity but the virus is still deadly.

The virus has taken the lives of 869 people in the Metro.

NMBM says they have not closed the Mandela Bay Stadium and the Dr Eoizabeth Mamisa Chabula-Nxiweni field hospitals yet in order to continue assisting patients.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s COVID-19 cases are edging closer to the 600 000 mark after 3 916 new cases were recorded on Wednesday.

According to the latest data, there are now 596 060 people who have contracted the virus, while the death toll is now 12 423.

Of the 159 additional COVID-19 related deaths, 37 were in the Eastern Cape.
