A former Port Elizabeth policeman has been sentenced to an effective eight years imprisonment in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.
Former Lieutenant Gibson Sam, who was stationed at Algoa Park, was sentenced on Tuesday on four counts of corruption.
According to the state, he attended to complaints lodged by members of the public and induced complainants to pay sums of money in exchange for his assistance.
In February 2010, Sam drafted a proposal to the family of a man arrested for murder, offering to tamper with the contents of the case docket in exchange for five-hundred rand.
He made several proposals in 2009 to "quash" dockets in exchange for money, airtime vouchers and whiskey.
Sam pleaded not guilty on all counts and subsequently resigned from the SAPS during October 2013.
