Lectures resume at Rhodes

The Academic programme at Rhodes University in Grahamstown was set to continue on Thursday.

This is according to the university's Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sizwe Mabizela.

The academic programme was suspended on Thursday last week in light of the nation-wide university protests in support of free tertiary education.

Classes resumed at Rhodes on Wednesday, but Dr. Mabizela said they were disrupted by a small group of students, who were quite militant - leading to 11 of them being arrested by police.

"Yesterday students were forced out of their lectures, and staff assaulted and intimidated in their offices. Police had to come and enforce the interdict and that is how some of the students got arrested. The protesting students left campus went on to Somerset Street where they had another confrontation with the police and more were arrested" he said.

The 11 arrested students are due to appear in court on Thursday.

Speaking on the DMB on Algoa FM on Thursday morning, Dr. Mabizela said it was his great hope that the academic year would continue uninterrupted today, as the consequences of suspending the academic year were too dire to contemplate.

"We do have a team that is trying to facilitate discussions among all the university constituencies so that we all come to some sensible arrangement and be able to save this academic year. Many students say I do not have money to come back next year and not only that, if we were to shut down our campus the consequences for greater Grahamstown community are dire indeed" he added.
