The Eastern Cape Department of Education says it is investigating an incident where Grade 12 learners assaulted a school principal in Mount Fletcher.
Department spokesperson Mali Mtima says the matric learners at Sidinane Secondary School ambushed and attacked the principal on Wednesday morning in an apparent dispute over the school's hair policy.
"Grade 12 learners locked the gates and attacked the principal. He was rescued by his colleagues and police were called on the scene," he said.
The principal had to get stitches and was discharged from the hospital on the same day.
Mtima says he was given one week's leave so he can recover at home.
He says there will be a meeting with all stakeholders at the school on Friday
"We are hoping that our leadership that we have despatched there will be able to guide the meeting so it can get to its logical conclusion which is an amicable solution. We will be using the policy, the South African Schools ACT and the constitution and other related regulations that govern schools in South Africa," Mtima added.
