Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality mayor, Athol Trollip, said that the laptops of three Public Health officials were seized as part of a forensic investigation into irregular payments.
In a statement Saturday, Trollip said that his “administration had identified a number of irregular payments and invoices in recent months, particularly in the Public Health Directorate.”
He said the raid on Friday night was carried out by Metro Police and other Municipal officials.
Trollip said that the investigation had led to the suspension of a municipal employee late last week “and prompted the City Manager to request that said laptops, which are the property of the Municipality, be retrieved.”
He said where the Municipality had completed investigations which identified alleged corruption, these will be reported to the police.
“We are now moving into a new phase of investigation into serious allegations of corruption various Directorates,” Trollip said.
He said he would brief the media and public next week on the status of these investigations.
