The Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements has bought 43.72 hectares of land in Walmer for future housing development for a price believed to be R43 million.
Metrominute reports that the land is situated adjacent to the Walmer Country Club on the Schoenmakerskop side of Victoria Drive.
While Human Settlements Acting Executive Director Lindiwe Petuna did not confirm the location of the land when asked at yesterday's committee meeting, members of the Walmer Community who were present stated that the land purchased was adjacent to the country club.
Confirmation of the land purchase is contained in the Mid-Term Budget and Performance Assessment Report that will be formally tabled in Council on Friday.
